Are you ready?

Are you a health care leader (clinician, administrator, or operator) who cares about lowering costs while improving outcomes? Sure, every leader will say they do, but are you ready to actually implement transformation and change to achieve these goals?

As many of you know (or don't), I have spent the last ten years tackling various value-based health care topics in orthopedics, focusing on cost-effectiveness research, patient reported outcome measures (PROMs), and integrated practice units (IPUs). Throughout the journey, we followed the same blueprint: clinical research followed by clinical translation. This journey has culminated into founding Protera Health, a virtual multidisciplinary clinic that helps health plans lower musculoskeletal (MSK) costs while maximizing health outcomes and engagement.

As part of this journey, it became apparent that the lessons learned in value-based care (VBC), along with those being discovered through our work with Protera Health, needed to be democratized. Moreover, these insights needed to be presented in clear writing, so that they could be implemented into practice. Whether you represent a health plan, self-insured employer, or risk-bearing provider organization, our goal is to help you drive all three levers of VBC: improved outcomes, improved experience, and decreased costs.

Introducing "The Value Shift"

"Value-based health care" is among the most talked about topics in modern health care. Unfortunately, much of this talking is heavy in concept and light in tactics. This newsletter will aim to change that.

Each week, this newsletter will highlight thought pieces, how-to guides, checklists, interviews, case studies, and news updates that will help health care leaders implement value-based care. Given our background in orthopedics, much of the content will be centered on MSK care and delivery. However, these principles can be applied to virtually any topic in specialty care.

Our focus on specialty care is deliberate. Estimates vary, but it is clear that a large proportion of health care expenditures are centered on specialty care, such as orthopedics, cardiovascular, neurological, oncology, mental health, to name a few. However, our main levers for cost-containment are centered on primary care, health insurance plans, or self-insured employer benefits, neither of which have great influence on specialty care (outside of utilization management, which is high-friction for everyone involved).
